Bide Awhile Animal Shelter:
- Is the longest continuously operating Shelter in HRM.
- Is one of the first No-Kill Shelters in Nova Scotia. Veterinary care is provided to the best of our financial ability. Euthanasia is a last resort for untreatable health or behavioral problems.
- Has operated from its Eaton Avenue location since 1972 – the building is more than 144 years old.
- Rescues and adopts about 300 animals a year. All are spayed or neutered.
- Is a private Shelter that receives no government assistance to operate.
- Was started by a handful of volunteers in 1969
- Has a Foster program to help less adoptable animals – the elderly and those with health problems - find a new, loving home.
- Is so committed to reducing pet overpopulation that it provides financial assistance for spaying and neutering to those unable to afford this essential care for their pets.
- Accepts animals from owners who can no longer care for their pets.
- Does Pet Visitation at a local nursing home
- Believes “pets are for life” and strives to find the right home for every animal it adopts

On April 22, 2007 one of six founding members Grace Burfitt and long - time volunteer Riet Koetsier were proud to attend our "turning of the sod" ceremony to start construction of the new shelter. What a great day it was!
